DESIGN CAME FIRST. PRODUCTION FOLLOWED.

Long before the first metal card shipped, the work was already rooted in graphic design, fabrication, machinery, and figuring out how to turn ideas into physical objects.

Before Custom Metal Business Cards existed, the work was already there. Founder Michael had spent years moving between graphic design, branding, merchandise, music, fabrication, and hands-on creative projects.

That mix of design and making became important later. It meant approaching a product from both sides: how the artwork should look and how the physical object actually needed to be made.

In 2020, that work expanded further into CNC fabrication, custom manufacturing, equipment restoration, machine work, and eventually laser engraving.

Learning each process meant solving a different set of problems: preparing artwork, understanding materials, setting up equipment, refining settings, building fixtures, and finding repeatable ways to turn one-off ideas into finished products.

THE PRODUCT THAT KEPT GROWING

METAL CARDS BECAME THE CLEAR STANDOUT.

Among the products being tested and made, engraved aluminum cards kept generating stronger customer response, repeat orders, and new demand.

Engraved business cards quickly began getting more attention than the other products being produced. Customers reordered them, shared them with others, and continued coming back with new designs.

The demand made it clear that metal cards were no longer just another experiment. They were becoming the product around which the shop could build a more focused operation.

As order volume increased, the production side grew with it. Equipment was expanded, engraving settings were refined, artwork preparation became faster, and repeatable workflows were developed for both individual cards and larger business runs.

What started as small-batch experimentation gradually became a production system built around consistency, speed, and the ability to handle custom artwork without losing the flexibility that made the product interesting in the first place.

HOW THE WORK EVOLVED

FROM EXPERIMENTS TO A PRODUCTION SYSTEM.

There was no finished blueprint at the beginning. Each stage grew from the tools, skills, customer response, and production problems that came before it.

BUILT AROUND REAL CUSTOMER IDEAS

SOME OF THE BEST PRODUCTS STARTED AS A CUSTOM REQUEST.

The catalog grew because customers kept bringing new ideas to the shop — and many one-off projects eventually became products and collections of their own.

Customers rarely stopped at business cards. A card could become a memorial keepsake. A single engraved playing card could become an entire deck. A QR code could become a permanent metal contact card, sign, gift, or piece of artwork.

Over time, those requests expanded into personalized keepsakes, playing cards, tarot cards, signs, allergy cards, memorial pieces, photographs, gifts, inside jokes, and designs that did not fit neatly into any existing category.

That variety is now part of what defines the shop. Professional business cards can be produced alongside personal gifts, specialty cards, signs, collectibles, and completely original customer designs.

The common thread isn't a particular category. It's the process: take an idea, prepare it carefully, understand how it will translate to metal, and engrave it in a way that preserves the detail and character of the original design.

There is still room for the next customer request to become something completely new.

THE EQUIPMENT GREW. THE PROCESS STAYED HANDS-ON.

Today, Custom Metal Business Cards produces custom laser-engraved cards and metal products from Upstate South Carolina for individuals and organizations around the world.

The catalog, equipment, and production systems are larger now, but the basic process is still direct. Customer artwork comes in, it is reviewed and prepared for engraving, the work is produced in-house, inspected, packaged, and shipped from South Carolina.

Orders range from single personalized keepsakes to hundreds or thousands of custom cards for businesses, teams, events, creators, and organizations.

Every new project still begins with the same question: how do we make this idea work well in metal?

Sometimes the answer is straightforward. Sometimes it means rebuilding artwork, adjusting a design, testing an engraving, or developing a new production approach. That problem-solving is still one of the best parts of the work.

And some of the most interesting projects still begin with someone asking, “Can you make this?”

LET'S TURN YOUR IDEA INTO METAL.
